What are the installation specifications you suggest?

The most important specs we recommend for installing an irrigation backflow assembly are as follows:

  • The backflow assembly needs to be 16'' below the surface
  • Ensure there is at least 6'' of clearance under the backflow assembly
  • Install unions on either end of the assembly
  • An isolation valve upstream of the assembly needs to be in place, ideally as close to frost depth as possible (2.5' - 3' below the surface)
  • The blowout connection must be installed downstream of the backflow assembly
  • Make sure there is adequate space around the assembly for testing and maintenance

When is a backflow prevention assembly required to be in place?

Any time you are tying in to potable drinking water, backflow prevention needs to be considered.

All underground irrigation systems run off of a building's water line, need to be protected with a backflow prevention assembly.

What kind of backflow assembly should I install?

If you are installing an irrigation system here in Central Oregon, you are required to install a Double Check Backflow Assembly.

You can find one at most plumbing supply stores, irrigation supply stores, or even places like Home Depot.

Do new assemblies need to be tested?

Yes, all assemblies are required to be tested upon installation. We know this surprises a lot of people, but the fail rate of new assemblies is actually quite high.

If you aren't extremely careful during installation, debris can be introduced into the piping, blocking the backflow assembly's internal check valves.

Testing is required to ensure the new assembly is functioning properly after it has been installed.

If you are in City limits, contact your City's permitting department for all this information.

If you are outside of the city, you would need to contact the County.

If you are utilizing an existing water system, you can also contact the water provider for the property.
